Awesome Author - Colin Guest

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am an English expat who has lived in Turkey for over 25 years. I love writing books, poems, and articles on a variety of subjects. I have had several poems placed in the final four in competitions with my last one made into a film. In conjunction with Voyage Media, I wrote a pilot episode for a possible television series. This is now on their distribution lists to see if there is any interest in it.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is a short fiction entitled Impending Disaster. Although based purely on fiction, it is however possible for something like this to happen. The story just came to me one day so I sat down and wrote it.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No, except I usually write while sitting on the sofa in our television room.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love action/adventure/thriller books by authors like Lee Child, Tom Clancy, Clive Cussler, Chris Ryan. As such I have read many of their books and try to use knowledge gained from them in my writing.

What are you working on now?
I am presently writing another book containing erotica

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
To date, I have found Facebook to be the best site for a book promotion, and now trying some other sites.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Once you start writing never give up.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
No matter what online site you use for editing, it is essential that you always use a professional editor.

What are you reading now?
The Manganese Dilemma by Ian J Millar

What’s next for you as a writer?
I write in the different genre with my next book being a suspense action story, the basis of which I have already in my mind.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Clear & Present Danger by Tom Clancy, One Shot by Lee Child and Richard Branston’s biography

Awesome Author - Lindsay Murtle

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Just one completed book so far, with 2 more in the manuscript stages and probably close to 100 more in the form of post-it note scribbles.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
‘My cat won’t stop stealing straws: and 20 other odd cat behaviors investigated’ is a nonfiction work of the strange things my cats do, and what I found out about why they do it when I researched it.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Sure, I think every good writer does. That’s what makes your writing original. I write for hours a day. Whether it’s working on my novel, my next nonfiction, my blog, or other work, writing is what I do. I wake up, turn on my Keurig, open the blinds for the cats, and write until I can’t keep my eyes open anymore.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I think every book I’ve read has influenced me. My short chapter structure comes from my love of James Patterson novels. My bookshelf is overflowing with nonfiction on everything from JavaScript to aquaponics, culinary arts to borderline personality disorder. College textbooks, children’s nonfiction, novels. If I’m not writing, I read. Finding inspiration everywhere, even in the most mundane book, is critical of every writer.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on another short nonfiction, detailing what I learned from self-publishing for the first time. It’s harder than it looks. A lot of education and research goes into it, and for writers just starting out, I think it’s going to be a great helpful guide.

I’m also working on the beginning of a novel, that looks like it’s going to be my first series. I’m really letting the characters run the show on this one, which makes for a really interesting writing experience. It also makes for interesting conversation with my in-laws.
“What are you writing now?”
“Actually, I’m working on a novel.”
“Oh, what’s it about?”
“I have no idea.”

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I love the Kindle platform and my WordPress website. I think it’s also really important to understand how things like Google and Facebook work for rankings and promotions.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Grow a thick skin. If you can’t handle criticism, do not publish. It’s the way of the world, people have opinions, and they share them a lot. You’ll hear rude comments, you’ll hear a lot of the word no. It’s okay, you only need one yes.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If you’re going to be broke, you may as well do something you love.

What are you reading now?
An author in a writing group I’m a part of just published a book called “Sheep of God” which is really an excellent read so far. I always like to keep a fiction and a non-fiction going at the same time, both in my writing and my reading, so I’m also reading Author in Progress by Therese Walsh.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Marketing and publicity. Everyone is so worried about their privacy online- who has their data, who knows what they’re texting… while writers struggle to gain an audience every day. There’s a lot more to being a writer than writing a manuscript in 2018. There’s publishing, sales, marketing, advertising, cover designs, editing… sure, you can outsource, but you can’t pay the bills for outsourcing if you can’t sell your book. Really mastering that art is my next goal.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Gone with the Wind for sure, I’ve been picking that book up and then putting it back down for years. Something always stops me from finishing it.

A Game of Thrones, simply because I’ll never read it unless I’m stranded on an island. I understand the widespread reach of it, but it simply isn’t a genre I like reading.

A college textbook on something I don’t know much about. As long as you live, you’ll never know everything about everything. But what is the purpose of life if we don’t try?

And a notebook. Being stranded in a new place would be inspiring. I’d want to get as much written as I could.

Awesome Author - De Fletcher

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m originally from Arkansas and grew up in the inner city and spent summer vacations and holidays on my grandparent’s farm in west central Arkansas.

Observing people and finding humor in the normal and abnormal has always come easy for me. Over the years friends have told me I should be a stand-up comedian.

Having grown up in predominantly black neighborhoods, my family poor with Native American ancestry, and serving in the military left a lasting impression on me. At times any or all of my different sides will make an appearance, much to the confusion of others.

I think of myself as a white woman with an Indian “center” who has “black moments” like those detailed in my first book “Born a Poor, Black, Indian, White Girl”.

My writing mixes a variety of perspectives, experiences, knowledge, humor and sarcasm into what could be best described as “Book Gumbo”.

I’ve always loved to read and would have bookshelves full of books with three or four books waiting to be read at any given time. My writing started with diaries then progressed to journals. I’ve even written some poetry and prose.

I attended university and earned a Master of Education degree from Weber State University in Utah. I used my education and work experience to become a trainer and case manager for various nonprofit, city, state and federal government sectors.

I’ve actually been a writer, creator, public speaker and professional trainer for over 20 years and have the unique ability to blend spirit, humor, simplicity and realism into my writing and classes.

After many years working for others, I now do the work I love as a writer, speaker, teacher and coach of living a purpose-filled life.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My first/latest book is “Born a Poor, Black, Indian, White Girl”.
I was inspired to write about the traumas I experienced growing up so as to share it with others who may feel alone in some of the same struggles.

I talk about what I learned and how I got passed, forgave, got over all the negative so I could find a happy purpose in life.

The title shows my struggle with identity and sense of place in the world growing up. I think a lot of people can relate to this.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes. I tend to slip into present tense when relating a story or experience (much to the dismay of my editor). I’m told it confuses readers, but I see it as just the way I talk.

I also tend to forget things like inside or outside the quotations. I am very aware of spelling though! Funny.

I can also start writing and go for hours without any sense of time having past. Oh yeah, I prefer writing the book first, then typing it into word. The pen and page seem to flow, but the computer distracts.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Wow. So many! I lean toward non-fiction though I read romance novels for a period of time.

Fiction was Stephen King, JRR Tolkien and just about anything period piece with action and adventure. (I see life kind of like those. Scary, circumstance, overcoming, etc.)

Nonfiction from Anita Moorjani, Dee Brown, tons of Native American history, Steven Covey, Brian Tracy, Don Miguel Ruiz, Carolyn Myss, Tom Brown, Jr., and the list could go on and on.

Anything showing an inspiring story or inspiring ways to enjoy life and be yourself.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on the paperback version of my new book.
After that the Audio Book.

Have a couple of other manuscripts I’m researching the reader demand on.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m new at being an author, but so far my best places for advice, etc. are:
1. The Creative Penn
2. KindlePreneur (Dave Chesson)
3. Mark Dawson 101 Self Publishing
4. Jeff Walker (Product Launch Formula)
5. TCK Publishing (Blog: List of Sites for Promotion)
6. Book Launcher (You Tube channel)

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Get quality help. Don’t try to do it all yourself.
The Alliance for Independent Authors (ALLI) has great resources.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Do what’s in your heart of hearts. No regrets! Don’t keep saying “I’ll do it when . . .”

What are you reading now?
Not reading a book at the moment as I’m right in the middle of my book release!

What’s next for you as a writer?
Build my audience, write more, enjoy life. 🙂

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Only 3 or 4? Seriously?
Okay . . .
1. Black Elk Speaks by John G. Neihardt
2. Wishes Fulfilled by Dr. Wayne Dyer
3. My book as it’s a long-time goal I’ve reached.

Awesome Author - Russell Dorn

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m the author of several young adult horror and children’s picture books. My adult horror stories have appeared in Dark Dossier, Grotesque Quarterly, Horror Bites, The Horror Zine, Infernal Ink Magazine along with many other publications. I am the co-creator of Felipe Femur, a free children’s website about a skeleton and his monstrous friends (www.felipefemur.com).

In total, I have written ten children’s and middle grade fiction books, the most popular of which are “Skeleton in the Closet,” my collection of illustrated middle grade horror stories, and “Felipe Femur,” my children’s picture book about a friendly skeleton that spawned the free children’s website of the same name.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Currently, I am focusing much more on getting my short horror stories published in a series of horror magazines in preparation of the release of my adult horror anthology, but the latest book I published was “Skeleton in the Closet and Other Scary Stories” (the audiobook being the latest version). A middle grade collection of horror, the book is heavily inspired by the books that haunted my own childhood, namely R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps series and Alvin Schwartz’ “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” the version with illustrations by Stephen Gammell. I’ve always been drawn to horror and I noticed there wasn’t all that many recent horror books for middle grade readers, so I thought I’d give it a try.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I doubt it’s all that unusual, but I need noise. A fan will do. Concerts in my teens and twenties left me with a mild case of tinnitus and I have a hard time concentrating in complete silence because of it. Other than that, I often work on several projects at once. I know many writers like to concentrate on one piece at a time, so me jumping back and forth might be seen as a bit unusual.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
First and foremost, I’m a huge fan of Shirley Jackson and literary horror in general. Richard Matheson, Slyvia Plath, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Haruki Murakami, Stephen King, Alice Sebold, Natsume Sōseki, Ramsey Campbell, and Banana Yoshimoto are also big influences on my work. For my children’s and middle grade fiction books: Alvin Schwartz, R.L. Stine, J.K. Rowling, and Shel Silverstein.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on a tarot card themed collection of adult horror stories and getting various stories from the collection published in horror publications. I’m also working on getting my first novel published.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still learning the promotion part of being an author, but I seem to have the most success with Book Hippo, Twitter, and Reddit. You have to be sure to find the right subreddit to post in or it could backfire.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write every day. Even if it’s just a sentence or two, those few lines are still something that’ll help you get in the habit. Beyond that, pay attention to how people talk in everyday life and try to replicate that in your fictional dialogue to make sure it comes across as realistic. Also try to avoid adjectives and passive voice.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
For writing? Don’t over complicate the language. Use simple words over complicated ones, such as “guts” instead of “gastrointestinal tract.” In other words, don’t go through your manuscript with a thesaurus changing words to make yourself sound more intelligent. You’ll only lose or annoy your audience.

What are you reading now?
I’ve finally gotten around to reading “House of Leaves” by Mark Z. Danielewski and that requires a real effort, so I’m mainly focused on that. However, I’m also reading “The Virgin Suicides” by Jeffrey Eugenides. Similar to my writing style, I tend to read several books at once rather than one at a time. As such, I’m also working my way through several horror e-books, including “A Head Full of Ghosts,” “And Her Smile Will Untether the Universe,” “I Am Not Your Final Girl,” and “Unhinged.”

What’s next for you as a writer?
As always, I plan to continue to hone my craft and learn new things. I also hope to publish my collection of unnerving adult horror stories within the next year and get my first novel published as I finish writing my second.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?

Awesome Author - Andi Jaxon

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Raised all over the country, I’m a interesting mix of East Coast meets West Coast with a little bit of Southern thrown in, just for good measure. I married a sexy man in uniform who let me spawn and am now raising a mutinous army of hell raisers that I created myself, all while he defends our country. I drink too much coffee until it’s late enough to drink too much wine and am sexually frustrated for your freedom. If you see me online, I’m probably sitting in a closet, hiding from my kids.

I have been writing most of my life, but after a push from Mr. Jaxon I took the leap earlier this year and published my first book. Now I have two books under my belt with a series on the way.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My most recent release is titled, The Good Doctor. It’s a story that I started when I was pregnant with my second child. It is based off of my doctor at the time, Adam.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Do I have to pick just one? The biggest one is I always have to have a pen and paper handy. I mainly write on my laptop, but I never know when another story idea is going to pop into my head hence the need for a pen and paper. I also never sit down without a cup of coffee and a water bottle. Once I get into the zone, I am in it for the long haul. I also can’t deal with quiet. I know it sounds odd when I am constantly hiding from my children, but I need something to set the mood for whatever I am writing that day.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
There are a lot of authors that I have read, but I kind of dance to my own drum beat. I tend to go where my muse takes me. If that happens to be similar to some one else then so be it.

What are you working on now?
Currently working on a Contemporary Romance Series. I am very excited about this, since it is the first full length I have written. I can’t wait to share it with all of my fans

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I don’t really have one to be honest. I am new at this so, I am still checking out different sites and methods to see what fits me best.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t define your own success off of those around you. You set goals and expectations for yourself no one else does. The road to being an author is a marathon not a sprint.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t be afraid to fail, you will do it often.

What are you reading now?
All the things. It changes daily

What’s next for you as a writer?
More writing. Finishing my series and then who knows.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Bad Mommy by Tarryn Fisher
The Outsiders by S.E. Hilton

Awesome Author - Ann Bradford

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Growing up on the prairies has made me a somewhat romantic country gal. I am a published author of Forbidden Romance and Erotica. Full Trust is a m/m/f erotica with suspenseful elements. His Holy Stare came out this year with Solstice Publishing and is part of the Truth or Dare Forbidden Love Series. This story is historical 20th Century Romance and is m/f. His Forbidden Stare will be out later this year and is m/m. I also have a short story published in the Renewal of Faith Vol2 Anthology: The Second Chance.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
His Holy Stare a Truth or Dare Forbidden Love was inspired by research I was doing at work. I was digging through some archives from the 50s. During this time Brothers ran a college for boys in the community and this one Brother’s face kept popping up.

At first, his smile sucked me in. Wow. He was one happy guy. But then as I stared at him, I saw a lingering saddest haunting his eyes. A story perhaps?

And so I wrote his story, but the big thing about this story was that I didn’t want him to cave to the temptation, because the man I saw in that picture was strong and dedicated. And so no matter how much she squirmed under his stare, Brother James held to his beliefs.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I work on several stories at a time.
I haven’t missed a day of writing in over 12 years.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love watching author interviews.
I also love books where the main character, on the first page, does something to defy. Always intrigues me.

What are you working on now?
As of today, April 2018, I am working on the third book in the Truth or Dare Forbidden Love Series; Their Sinful Stares.

I like to work on several projects at once, so there is also a medieval m/m romance I’m working on, and a shifting series that is m/m/f. A m/f romance about memory loss, and a m/m/f erotica that’s suspense.

All are written and in various editing phases. Not sure which one will be done first but I bet it’ll be Their Sinful Stares!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Paying for ads has gotten by far the best results.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
As an artist, we write with passion.
To keep our sanity, we write for ourselves.
As readers, we write the story we want to read.
As authors, we simply write because we must.

Is it easy? No. Sticking to your calling never is, just ask my dear Brother James in His Holy Stare. But is it worth it? Well, only you can decide that. I sure wouldn’t change a thing. 😉

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
In an interview I was watching, the author was asked why her characters were so hot. She so casually replied something like: Because I wrote them that way. What a strong reminder that I am God of my manuscript. Sometimes my characters need reminding of this. Heck, sometimes I need reminding of this.

What are you reading now?
A book about Celtic beliefs. Need some fodder for my medieval romance and it has some great things I can use.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I will write.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Three notebooks, so I could write my own stories. And a Jean M. Auel. Doesn’t matter which one.

Awesome Author - Roman Fischer

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a young, bold, and highly ambitious twenty year old who will never stop dreaming and grinding towards what I want to achieve. I have huge goals for myself: from modeling/acting to writing. I’ve traveled across the United States for photoshoots and workout six days a week to maintain and improve my physique.

I’ve written one book so far and am in the process of writing a second one!

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My first and latest book is called “Rules to Rule Successfully”. What truly inspired me to write it is that I just wanted to have a voice. A voice that would help others live a structured life to help ensure that they’ll attain the success in whatever they’re pursuing.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I wouldn’t say that I do have any.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Authors like J.K. Rowling and Dale Carnegie have influenced me immensely to start writing.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on a fictional book. The title is still in the works, but the storyline is coming along quite well!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My best method until I get my own professional website is to go to radio stations and promote it via my YouTube channel.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
My best piece of advice for new aspiring authors is to remember one thing: the moment you click the publish button, you’re not at the finish line. You must then market the life out of it until your book is everywhere.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I’ve ever heard is to never ever give up.

What are you reading now?
I’m currently reading “The Inspired Life”.

What’s next for you as a writer?
My next step is to constantly promote my current book all while finish writing my second book.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would bring “How to Win Friends and Influence People”, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, and also my book “Rules to Rule Successfully”.

Awesome Author - Alexander Pereira

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
A little over a decade ago, I was in an accident which left me in a hospital for months and in recovery for years. I developed a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and had lots of troubles with memory loss, seizures and cognitive functions. During my journey back I developed a love for reading even though it was exponentially harder (and slower) after my accident. A Lonely Aura of Justice is my first book and is a personal triumph that I am honored to share with my readers.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I didn’t expect to be an author, I was writing for me and me alone. I wrote a few vignettes, a few short stories, some over-indulgent diary entries and organically they all evolved into a coherent story. Once that story developed, I became excited to polish and share my adventure.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I didn’t grow up appreciating books, I went through almost a decade after school practically illiterate. Before my accident I was a good reader, I just didn’t care for it. It wasn’t until reading became a struggle that I found my passion. With my memory it’s hard for me to remember the specific books that influenced me, but the book that was most responsible was Jurassic Park. It wasn’t my favorite book, but it was the first one I read and actually understood after my accident.

What are you working on now?
A Lonely Aura of Justice was a wonderful experience but it was long and emotionally draining. I am experimenting with some lighter (to me) genres and different styles to expand my range as an author. I am hoping to have one of these projects finished by the end of the year. I do have ideas for spiritual follow ups to my current book, but they are all in the planning stages and will probably be a few years away.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have been getting excellent word of mouth response from my book from friends, friends of friends etc. but I am having trouble promoting it outside of my degrees of Kevin Bacon. I am still navigating promotional opportunities.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t listen to advice 🙂

What are you reading now?
I am reading the Road by Cormac McCarthy. It’s an extremely challenging book for me but I am enjoying it so far.

What’s next for you as a writer?
As I mentioned I am spreading out into new genres and exploring beautiful new worlds on page.

Awesome Author - Jacquitta McManus

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a little girl from Kentucky that was always drawn to fantasy stories. It was a way for me to engage in exciting adventures in faraway lands that I would otherwise never experience. As I got older, I found that immersing herself in those tales in my childhood would lead me to writing my own. I’m the author of two children’s fantasy adventure stories: Anyia, Dream of a Warrior, and Talee and the Fallen Object.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
It was daydreaming that led to the idea of Anyia, Dream of a Warrior; a strong willed warrior that would challenge her village’s traditions. A character that would take the chance to follow her dream of being who she was.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
The process itself varies depending on the book. Since Talee and the Fallen Object started out as a coloring book, I always start her books with images. It helps to keep the story simple because the story has to connect through a limited number of images. The one thing I have noticed that is consistent with the beginning of new stories is that I always begin with a character in mind. From there I work on the world and I start a character journal where the characters talk about their day and what goes on in their lives.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I read a lot of fantasy and science fiction books as well as watch a lot of movies in the genre. I would say that watching the Avatar: the Last Airbender cartoon series with my son really influenced my writing style.

What are you working on now?
I working on the next installments of Talee and Anyia as well as a new series, Ava Brooks, whom I think is a fun feisty character that people will love. And I’ll continue to work on more stories and more worlds for readers to enjoy.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Facebook ads has been a great help in getting my books out their as well as Amazon ads.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
To do it if you love it! I wouldn’t be publishing books if I didn’t love being a storyteller. It’s hard work to get people to give you a chance. There are a lot of obstacles and a lot of do-it-yourself projects, but because I love what I do it doesn’t bother me so much. Just remember, there are going to be bad days. There will be tough times and decisions but if you love what you are doing that’s not going to stop you. Take a step at a time. Take a step everyday toward your dream. You will find a way to make it work and keep on going, and in the end it will all be worth it.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t give up on yourself.

What are you reading now?
Artemis by Andy Weir
Epoch Shift by Jake Lingwall
Ogilvy on Advertising by David Ogilvy

What’s next for you as a writer?
I will continue Talee and Anyia on their journeys as well as introduce Ava Brooks and work on more stories and more worlds for readers to enjoy.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I don’t read books twice so I would take a kindle with a solar panel battery charger and fill it up books.

Awesome Author - Anneli Sinkko

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
At one time in the past I wrote newspaper articles about my cat – true. Then, against all expectations, I became a published author when Dr Teresa de Donato approached me about writing a book together ; ‘Hunting for the Tree of life: A Spiritual Journey in the Garden Traditions’. This book is based on my Master’s thesis together with the wisdom of Dr Donato.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
‘God is Bigger than Google’. Well, I ended in hospital after a fall [I am an old person – now 80]. There my Lord Jesus had my undivided attention and he asked me to write about our relationship. The name for the book came when I asked him about prayer. I said” You must have quite a network in heaven – how else can God hear and make note of all the prayers sent to him?’ My Lord Jesus laughed and said: ‘God is bigger than Google’. There I was, on my hospital bed laughing like a mad woman I am – and my Lord laughed with me. I know not everybody sees or hear the Divine and I asked about this and he said: ‘they don’t believe in me’. So, that is the reason I wrote this book because I need to tell others about my Lord Jesus and perhaps some will believe in him and find an extraordinary life which changes everything.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I usually write a little bit and think a lot. Sometimes I get up in the middle of the night because I get inspiration and need to write it down before I forget it – I am after all quite old. Often an idea comes to me when I am not at home near my computer. So, I have little pieces of paper and write on them and when I get home – well, I collect my bits of paper and write things down – as you can see I am quite an accidental writer.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
When I was a student at the University I studied Greek New Testament – this was inspired by Professor Bruce Metzger who visited a Bible College I was attending. I love Paulo Coelho and Umberto Eco – they both have insight both to human nature and Divine mystery. But most influential book in my library is y old Bible – which I read ‘religiously’. And one more book, and I haven’t finished it yet: Fleming Rutledge’s ‘The Crucifixion – Understanding the Death of Jesus Christ’. When I was younger I used to adore Isaac Asimov and Louisa May Alcott.

What are you working on now?
absolutely nothing. As a retired minister I preach occasionally in my local church ‘Graceville Uniting’ and when such occasion occurs I write sermons. I also have a study group which will study next time ‘Theology of Worship’ … but I wrote that one a long time ago – so it sits in y computer waiting to be revealed. My computer is full of stuff which one by one finds itself exposed to pure daylight.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have no idea how to go about this – I need all the help I can get. The Uniting Church in Australia, Queensland Synod is assessing my book at the moment and perhaps they will review it in their paper.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just go for it. Sometimes you don’t really know whether you have been called to write and you cannot know unless you try it.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
When I was praying one night about troublesome things in my life, including my book, my Lord Jesus said to me: ‘Let go of you and let Me’.
I think that was the best advice I ever received – I just hope I could accept it with the same grace it was given – but … I am obstinate person.

What are you reading now?
Rutledge’s ‘Crucifixion’ and David Lagercrantz’ [continuing Stieg Larson’s Millenion series] ‘The Girl in the Spider’s Web’ and my old NIV Bible. REad some of all of them every night.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Not sure. Perhaps something will pop up but at the moment I am quite happy to write an occasional sermon. Come to think about it; I would love to write something to a weekly paper/magazine – but don’t think it will happen. I am too old and too old fashioned and not ‘with it; with this world we now live in.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The ones I am reading now – I need to know what happens next. Perhaps the newest of Glenn Cooper’s trilogy; I like something dangerous and amazing in my life.

Awesome Author - Jason Stanley

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am fan of Akira Kurosawa films, along with the original Star Wars movies and a little tv series called Babylon 5. I have recently gotten into the Star Wars miniature game Armada and quite enjoying it. Also I love rpg, both table top and videogames. Some of my favorite anime are Spice and Wolf, Legend of Galactic Heroes, Inu Yasha, Crest Of the Stars, Princess Jellyfish, and Legend of Legendary Heroes. I have only written a small amount of books. My First novel was In The Shadows followed by Geometry of Souls, and I have since combined them into one book I titled, Shadow of Souls. I also have written a book called Zmeij. I have also written a couple dark fantasy shorts about a Friar and a Hultan who hunt down demons, the first of those being The Wolves of North Wood followed by a second short, The Horror of Hellgarde.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My most recent book is Zmeij. It was inspired by several things, one of the key inspirations behind Zmeij was the novel Dune. Though in truth I only took my magic system from Dune. Zmeij has some issues with certain things as I had three different ideas for the ending, so I thought I would leave it up to the reader to decide which ending they liked best. It is probably in some ways my most unconventional book. I thought I made things clear on the fact that it has different endings by not using the term chapters for the endings but calling them appendices; but I guess that is confusing and I apologize for that.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No. Nothing any more unusual from other writer’s I would think. My writing habit is basically to listen to music in the background. Though I do not always do this, sometimes I write in complete silence. I guess one thing that could be unusual is I love the feel of a pen in my hand when I write, and it feels to me that sometimes more inspiration comes to when I am sitting/relaxing with a pad of paper and pen rather then doing it on a computer. Alot of times I have to transfer/decipher my bad handwriting from paper to PC.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Every author I have ever read have influenced me, which is a long list. I have three authors who I greatly admire, Harlan Ellison, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Robert E. Howard.

What are you working on now?
My latest book I am currently working on and hope to have out soon, is Wurm’s Blood. It is inspired primarily by German and Norse Mythology. Although it is not obvious it also has a the tiniest bit of Japanese mythology in it, but it is so small I do not think most people would be able to guess what it is.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
To be honest I am not very good at promoting my books. I am not very business savvy either. So as to recommendations of places to promote books I do not know. However word of mouth in general is a good way to promote things I think.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Never give up no matter what anyone tells you, use it as driving force to make you work even harder. And keep working hard at polishing your works but know when it is time to stop that polishing and sell.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I heard though not sure if it is advice or not is from Harlan Ellison, “The trick is staying a writer.”

What are you reading now?
I suppose you mean more then this question. Ha ha! To answer your question I am currently reading Chronicles of Prydain: Castle of Llyr: and The Bard by Morgan Llewellyn.

What’s next for you as a writer?
My next project is a trilogy that uses Irish Mythology as the base for the world. It is going to be about the Book of Invasion. The First Book in this series I am calling The First Ones and will be about a group of refugees whose homeland has been destroyed and all the hardships they face after finding a new land.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Obviously the first book I would bring would Lord of the Rings, Spice and Wolf, Shatter Day by Harlan Ellison, and Swordbearer by Glenn Cook.

Awesome Author - E. B. Davis II

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My author bio on Amazon says this “E.B. Davis II is a writer, mother, wife and a graduate of The School of Hard Knocks. She’s lived these pages and wants you to avoid that pain. She is also the author of How Not to be an Asshole, which is an okay read but could stand a re-write. She knows she swears too much and doesn’t really care. She’s not sure why she lives in Columbus, Ohio with her husband, kids and a menagerie of animals when there are warmer places with less crazy weather. ”

E.B. Davis II is my pseudonym, too.

I’ve written two books that are chock full of bad words but awesome information. I do swear a lot and I felt that many self-help books tend to give the impression of the person holding your hand or patting your head when in reality, we need to hear the harsh words of truth. That those words can often get through to someone faster than trying to be compassionate, which I totally am. This kinder, gentler crap can sometimes cause more problems. A reviewer said my book was like getting a sympathetic hug and a slap in the face at the same time.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Adulting 101: How to Get Your Sh*t Straight so You Can Succeed is the title of my latest book. This was inspired by an e-friend online. I’ve never met them in person but their postings are usually dire and desperate. I wrote this book about common problems, things I had to work through, that people have that keep them from moving forward in their lives. I wrote this book as if I was standing there, grabbing on to their shirt or lapels and just shaking them, “Don’t you see? YOU’VE made this mess!” I am in the process of re-writing the book slightly to take out the bad language. The book’s information is solid and applicable and I realize that not everyone wants to read such profanity.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I am awake, but not necessarily out of bed, by 3:30am every day of the week but one. On that one day of the week that I don’t get up at 3:30am, I feel really guilty. After I get up, I make a hot beverage and I write until the children wake up (or work on marketing or schoolwork) and start pestering me.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m a voracious reader. I love any books that try to help you out. I read a ton of non-fiction and some of it is hit or miss. I’m reading a book now about how teens are taking longer to grow up and how this is good for everyone. I’m reading it and just chuckling, “No..no….” but I read it anyway because it is a different perspective and I can learn something new or have my own perceptions challenged. As for fiction, I haven’t read anything lately. I did read Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King as my mother’s suggestion. It was fun but that was a while ago. Between kids, school, writing, work and keeping everyone alive, I don’t get as much time to read as I would like.

What are you working on now?
I am working on an update and a re-write to my first book, How Not to be an Asshole; and I am working on the removal of the bad words from my second book, Adulting 101: How to Get Your Sh*t Straight so You Can Succeed. That book will have a different subtitle and cover to differentiate it from its parent.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m a new author so I am still learning all these ins and outs. I will say that not trying to recreate the wheel is a good idea. Find someone who has done what you’ve done and just follow their process.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Yes, writing is the easy part! It is everything else that is difficult.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I don’t think that I’ve heard it yet.

What are you reading now?
Textbooks. I’m in school working on my Bachelor’s Degree. This summer, I plan on consuming as many books for pleasure as possible.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I have Book 3 of The Rant Series in outline form. This one will be about decision making and how to figure out what you want. I also am in very early states of a piece that will tie into my degree as an undergraduate thesis project that will hopefully roll me into my Master’s program. Maybe I’ll publish it.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Snowball: Warren Buffett and The Business of Life by Alice Schroeder. He is infinitely fascinating and it is such a big book that it could be used to start fires.
Skeleton Crew by Stephen King. Short stories, I can read them over and over. They never get old.
Anything by Malcolm Gladwell

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a husband, father, Veteran, and amateur boat builder. Spring Break Iraq is my first book and I am very proud of it.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of the book is Spring Break Iraq. The inspiration came from my experiences overseas and the desire to tell a story that highlights the internal struggle of today’s service member. I wanted to paint a picture through words of what war and the military is like today, so that it isn’t lost tomorrow.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No, but I do have quite a coffee addiction.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I read all of the greats within the military genre before writing this book, but I think the most influential author I have read would be Ayn Rand and her book We The Living.

What are you working on now?
Something completely different. A coming of age literary fiction tale with overwhelming tones of the 80’s and Americana. Its gonna be rad.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Grassroots

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Nope, I am one.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Give it a try and see how it works out.

Around the World in 80 Days.

What’s next for you as a writer?

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I don’t know, something quirky like a survival series where the books double as a life raft, clean water, and a fishing pole.

Awesome Author - S.L. Sterling

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was born and raised in southern Ontario. I now live in Northern Ontario Canada and I am married to my best friend and soul mate, we have two dogs.

An avid reader all my life, I dreamt of becoming an author. I decided to give writing a try after one of my favorite authors launched a course on how to write your novel. This course gave me the push I needed to put pen to paper and my debut novel “It Was Always You” was born.

When I’m not writing or plotting my next novel I can be found curled up with a cup of coffee, blanket and the newest romance novel from one of my favorite authors.

In my spare time, I enjoy camping, hiking, sunny destinations, spending quality time with family and friends and of course reading.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my latest book is It Was Always You. It was just a story that I have held onto for years.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I always have to have a cup of coffee by my side.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
The book that influenced me the most was Excuses Be Gone by Wayne Dyer.

What are you working on now?
Currently, I am working on two books, A Kiss Beneath the Stars and a Christmas Romance.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m in the beginning stages so I am just learning what works, I am basically trying a little bit of everything.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Follow your dreams and keep your head up. It takes time and hard work to get your name out there, do not get discouraged!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I wouldn’t call it advice, but a favorite quote of mine is:

But what if I fall? Oh my darling, but what if you fly.

What are you reading now?
She Asked for It by Willow Winters

What’s next for you as a writer?
Well, my next release will be out in August. I am really excited for my readers to read this story. It is funny but emotionally charged. Then, of course, my November release.

Gentlemen Nine by Penelope Ward
The Roommates Series by Kendall Ryan
Misadventures of a City Girl by Meredith Wild

Awesome Author - Ian Elliott

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was in a car accident in 2007, suffered a TBI, was in a coma for a month. I had to relearn everything from walking and talking, to feeding myself and penmanship (which is still horrible). I always loved writing poetry, and now I just wanted to share how I view the world, and sometimes the struggles I have had. I compiled a group of my poems in late 2017 and published my first book through Amazon in December.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The title is “Some Call Them Demons” and it’s a collection of my new view on humanity, and kindness, hatred, a couple pol times a week. I plaitical poems to top it off.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I recently have started a regime where I write for at least a half an hour, 3 times a week. I plan to up it some, but I wanted an achievable goal to start with.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I think the main answer would have to be Sylvia Plath, who I read in High School. I found her deeply moving, a little silver tongued, terribly clever, and thoroughly honest. I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder around then, so I felt a personal connection. I would be remiss if I left out Maya Angelou, who writes so beautifully — almost song-like in some of works.

What are you working on now?
I am getting started on a second book, but I’m taking it more seriously, and putting in more effort in continuity, and just better writing.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
This is all still very new, and you’re the first one I chose.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
It can be a really emotional journey, but my best advice: start. You’ll probably not have a best seller right away, but keep at it; your writing continues to evolve and sharpen the more you do it. Also, stay true to yourself. Don’t write a handyman’s book if you love Murder Mysteries.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Just start. If you never try, you never succeed.

What are you reading now?
“Walking the Bones” by Randall Silvis. He’s a highly-intelligent writer; and honestly, I have had to look up a few words already.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I will just keep writing and see what happens. I won’t be world famous, but I’d like to know if my poetry has ever helped any one.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would bring the complete works of Sylvia Plath, and some from the Harry Potter Series.

Awesome Author - Ashley Goss

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Since I was a little girl, writing has been my passion. Over the course of the last three years, I have published four books. While most authors stay within one genre, I plan to expand across multiple. Later this year, I will be releasing my first mystery novel.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
1105 c stRekindled Love is my latest release. Inspiration came from a dream and a movie. The story is based out of where I live and to write the book, I frequently sat in bars, restaurants to people watch.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I always have coffee with me while I write as well as pens, a notebook, and my phone. Although, this isn’t unusual among writers.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
My biggest influence has been Nicholas Sparks. I have always loved the way he can evoke emotion thru his writing. I have not read a book written by him that hasn’t made me laugh, scream and bawl my eyes out.

What are you working on now?
Right now, I am working on my first mystery novel set to release in September of 2018.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Self-promotion has always been my go-to thing. My newsletter is sent out twice a month. I keep my readers updated on my writing, what I’m currently reading, and how I am feeling towards everything. This has proved to be the best method of promotion for myself and my work.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t think you are going to become an overnight sensation once you publish a book. It’s hard work and all you can do is continue to write for your audience no matter what you make. Writing should be something you enjoy, not something you do because you want to make money. If you enjoy what you write, then money will surely follow.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?

What are you reading now?
Currently, I am reading Ready Player One. I bought the book before it came out in theatres. Last weekend, I went and saw the movie twice. Yes, twice. It’s that good. I couldn’t help myself. I had to read the book too.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Next on my agenda is to write across genres. I have written in contemporary romance and paranormal romance so far. By the end of next year, I want to have a mystery/thriller book and a crime fiction book out for my readers.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
1. The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks
2. Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
3. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

Awesome Author - Richard Moore

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
When I heard Joseph Campbell say that the meaning of life is to “follow your bliss”, it immediately hit home and I decided to run with it.

The first book that blew my mind, when I read it as a seventeen year old, was On The Road. Ever since I have felt that ‘Writer’ was the highest calling a human could achieve. Though I will never fill Kerouac’s shoes, I still feel writing is my bliss, and the only thing I want to live my one life doing.

I was born in the San Francisco Bay Area, and have also written in Alaska, Manhattan, and Hawaii.

The Golden Age of Everything is my first and only book so far.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book (and only one to date) is The Golden Age of Everything. It was inspired by my efforts at self-improvement in attempting to overcome my negative psychological schema. And my desire to make people laugh.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I estimate that I have deleted 99% of all the words I have ever written.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I strive to write with the novelty of Burroughs, the humor of Heller, the vigor of Joyce, and the attitude of Palahniuk.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on coming up with a great, new idea for a second novella.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have yet to sell a single book, so promotion is still a struggle.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Writing is rewriting. And rewriting. And rewriting. And rewriting.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out. – George Orwell.

What are you reading now?
A failed writer’s masterpiece that was ignored in his time: Moby Dick.

What’s next for you as a writer?
A hilarious novella about suicidal depression, if I don’t kill myself first.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Ulysses. Catch-22. Gravity’s Rainbow. The Golden Age of Everything (I’d make notes for a 2nd edition in the margins).

Awesome Author - Rhian J. Martin

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Rhian J. Martin. I’ve only published one book so far, a fiction novel entitled “A Different Familiar,” but I have plenty more currently in the works. In fact, I have a couple of finished manuscripts just sitting in my desk, waiting for me to revisit them.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is called “A Different Familiar.” It was inspired by my time living in Galway, which is a charming city located on the west coast of Ireland. Galway is a beautiful place – a place I think of as my second home, and one that I endeavored to capture in my novel. Living there allowed me to become intimately acquainted with the Galwegian way of life and the individual parts of the city that make it so unique – its cobbled streets, quaint shops, schools, and churches; its vibrant and artistic culture; its physical beauty; and its fascinating and complex history. As such, “A Different Familiar” is set in Galway, and the main characters interact with the place in a way that I hope transfers the experience to readers.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes, I suppose all writers do, really, so I don’t know how unusual my habits are. Mine tend to be writing in the late night and early morning hours (midnight to about four in the morning is my most productive time, albeit staying up like that is most definitely bad for my health), writing chapters and sections out of sequential order and then piecing them together like a puzzle, and working with something I call a “dump document.” A “dump document” is a space (either in a physical journal or in Word Processor) where I literally dump all of my writing ideas that don’t really have a home yet. This could be character names, plot points, bits of dialogue, etc. I’ll usually have one dump document per book, but sometimes I create general ones for ideas that don’t neatly fit into any of my current projects. I find it’s important to record those thoughts, because if I’ve learned anything, it’s that good ideas are often too ephemeral for the average human to keep up with. We must have a million per day and promptly forget about them before we can find an adequate pen and some paper, so maintaining dump documents is my way to combat that.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Much of my work is influenced by Irish and British authors, such as Virginia Woolf, Oscar Wilde, Maeve Binchy, Colm Tóibín, and Frank Delaney, to name a few. I admire them each for different reasons: sometimes it’s their wit, intuition, and humor; sometimes it’s the way they delve so deeply and purely into the vast complexities of the human character; sometimes it’s the way they choose to represent places and spaces; and other times, it’s the way each author thinks, and how they subsequently craft those thoughts upon the page.

What are you working on now?
I have a long laundry list of projects I’m currently working on, to be honest, with no end in sight. The one that I keep coming back to most consistently takes place in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in the 1920s. It grapples with the idea that the people we live near – neighbors, housemates, family, and friends – are layered and deep, and rarely do we know them as well as we think we do.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I really enjoy Goodreads, as it operates as a social network for people who love books. The functionality of the site is fantastic and engaging, so I mainly direct readers to my Goodreads page if they’re looking to learn more about either myself or my work. For those who are interested, please feel free to visit my Goodreads author page here: https://www.goodreads.com/rhianjmartin

Do you have any advice for new authors?
My best advice for new or aspiring authors is to keep writing, even when you think your manuscript may not be worth it. Every writer goes through bouts of uncertainty and doubt, but just remember that those difficult moments are not reflective of your talent, your drive to write, or your work as a whole. No one ever sat down and penned a best-seller without considerable dedication and revision, so be patient with yourself.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Some of the best writing advice I’ve ever heard is to stay organized. Some writers don’t like to use outlines or plot maps before they begin writing, but I’m one who prefers to at least have an idea of where I’m going and where I’d like to end up before I jump into a project. Keeping my work and ideas organized also allows me to remember the big picture of a book instead of feeling swamped in all of the little details, which, in turn, allows me to set and work towards an end goal. It makes overwhelming tasks much more attainable.

What are you reading now?
I’m a fan of murder mysteries, so right now I’m reading Alan Bradley’s “The Grave’s a Fine and Private Place.” The main character and narrator, Flavia de Luce, is a clever and spunky young girl with a penchant for chemistry and solving murders, so I’m enjoying her story and characterization. Bradley’s writing style, voice, and ingenious plotting abilities really keep me hooked, as well. It’s a fantastic read – highly recommended.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m going to keep writing and planning my next books for the moment. Beyond that, who knows? I’m always on the lookout for new ideas and opportunities.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
This is a really tough question. I’m sure my answers to this one would vary by the day, but as of right now, I’d bring Oscar Wilde’s “The Picture of Dorian Gray” (for the horror, humor, and memorable quotes), Jane Austen’s “Pride & Prejudice” (for the wonderfully cynical hero and clever heroine), and Stuart Shotwell’s “Edmund Persuader” (for the adventure, drama, and the sheer length of this epic – it might be good to have something long and complex to keep me occupied on the island). Another great choice would be a survival manual – which would hopefully include instructions on how to build a boat – just in case I decide I’d like to live for more than a pitiful few days!

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.”

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Christmas Message: Reflections on the Significance of Christmas from The Queen’s Christmas Broadcasts. Our family regularly listened to these broadcasts on Christmas Day, and when I read transcripts of them I was impressed with The Queen’s insights about the meaning of Christmas, so compiled excerpts of her Christmas Messages.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I have edited 20 individual Renewal Journals and 4 books of compiled journals. I originally published with commercial publishers, but now offer those books and new ones in regularly edited and updated independent publishing with Amazon and Kindle. Most of my books are available in a Basic Edition (normal print), Gift Edition (colour print), and as an eBook (Kindle).

What authors, or books have influenced you?
The world’s bestseller, translated into over 400 languages and parts of it translated into 3,000 languages, still inspires me, especially in different versions – the Bible. Historical novels often grab me, especially books by Morris West, Lloyd Douglas, and C S Lewis.

What are you working on now?
At 80 I am writing my memoirs, titled Journey into Mission. I’ve appreciated serving and helping friends in over 15 countries, as have my three children and all eight grand-children.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My core website is www.renewaljournal.com, with links to hundreds of articles and books.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Start with topics that inspire and influence you. Keep ideas and drafts on file. Some of my best books have come from reviving or building on prior writing.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Love God and love others. All great leaders and influential writers and others value and promote loving, caring and helping relationships.

What are you reading now?
I often return to C S Lewis, always brilliant and prolific. His novels The Chronicles of Narnia, now being filmed again, remain entertaining reading, and so I have produced seven books, also compiled into one volume, of Discovering Aslan, devotional reflections on these stories.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I hope to complete my memoirs, and then continue to continue with more books on mission and revival.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, Mere Christianity by C S Lewis, A History of Christianity (Volumes I & II) by K S Latourette.

Awesome Author - Martin J. Best

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was born in Torquay, UK, in 1965 where I still live. I grew up in an actively haunted house, which probably explains my interest in the supernatural.

I have independently published six works so far: a haunted house short story, The Moth Trap; a hard fantasy short A Step Aside; and the Ghost Hunter series.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Ghost Hunter: Blood Ties. It is the fourth outing of the Ghost Hunter series. The inspiration for the series comes from a desire to create a feasible scenario for ghosts and other supernatural entities to exist in the mundane world. I draw on personal experience, research, speculative quantum physics, and imagination to make my vision real.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Influential authors, in no particular order, are: Clark Ashton-Smith; Brian Lumley; Mervyn Peake; J.R.R. Tolkien; James Herbert; and John Crowley.

What are you working on now?
The fifth Ghost Hunter outing: Remnants and Revenants.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Still working on that! Facebook has been a reasonable medium.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Get the basics right: spelling; grammar; and punctuation. Many promising stories are ruined by a lack of technical skill.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t give up!

What are you reading now?
John Connoly’s Charlie Parker series.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Finish the current Ghost Hunter novel, then a spin off short story follow up to The Moth Trap.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Mervyn Peake’s Gormenghast trilogy.

Awesome Author - Yvette Calleiro

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a passionate middle school intensive reading teacher. I live in Miami, Florida. I enjoy reading, writing, hanging out at the beach, exercising, spending time with friends and family, and traveling. I’ve published 5 novels, all of which are part of my Chronicles of the Diasodz series.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The One Awakened (Chronicles of the Diasdoz, Book 5) is my latest book. It is the finale of my series. The whole series was inspired by a dream that I had which woke me up in tears. Within weeks, I had a layout for all five books and spent the next six years writing them.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t believe any of my writing habits are unusual. I map out my plots in a journal and type up my stories on my computer. Pretty normal. 😉

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m a big fan of fantasy and paranormal novels. I love JRR Tolkein’s The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Harry Potter series, the Anita Blake series, the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, and the Midnight Breed series. I also enjoy dystopian stories (Hunger Games, Divergent series, etc.). I prefer series books over standalones.

What are you working on now?
I am currently working on a prequel to my series. As I was writing, one of the characters made it very clear that he want his story told, so I am honoring his wishes. 😉

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Promoting is my weak area. I have found the most help from the Rave Review Book Club and its reading and authors.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Join a community of authors. Writing tends to feel like a solitary existence, but when you surround yourself with others who share your passion, it can help inspire and motivate you. Plus, they will continue to help you improve your craft.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Surround yourself with positive energy.

What are you reading now?
Captured Lies by Maggie Thom and Terra’s Call by P.T.L. Perrin are the two books that I’m reading.

What’s next for you as a writer?
As soon as I finish the prequel to my series, I plan to revisit a young adult novel that I wrote years ago but never got around to publishing.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’d rather bring my Kindle with a supernova type of hotspot and a solar charger. Lol! 😉

Awesome Author - Aften Brook Szymanski

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m an unrepentant nerd. I love all things Star Wars. I’m raising a super army (my three kids) with advanced nerding powers, all specializing in their own nerdable areas. Some people mistake us for geeks.
I’ve written one picture book, four middle grade books (Liar Lindly Brandt Series and Hero Club), and two Young Adult novels (including Cheat Code).

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
CHEAT CODE.
This is going to sound lame, I had a dream about acid rain wiping out humanity and it was super gory in my dream. When I woke up, I was terrified to go back to sleep without a solution if I found myself dreaming about the acid rain violence again, so I told myself that if that happened again, to treat it like a game and be recoded onto a new level.
For some reason that worked! I was able to get back to sleep again. <3
I wrote out a basic premise for living inside a game world and CHEAT CODE unfolded.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I work full time and like spending evenings after work with my kids and husband, so I write after everyone else goes to bed. Usually from 10-12pm (or later). It’s rough because I’m not a morning person and have to be up at 6 or earlier. So most of my habits revolve around trying to stay awake all day so I can write at night. (I’m a night person, so staying awake after 10pm isn’t that big of a deal).

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Recently the Scythe series (Neal Shusterman) has influenced me. So well written.
I also love Josi Kilpack (Culinary Mysteries particularly) and Ruta Sepetys (historic fiction at its best).
When I find a writer I admire, I often try to learn what they do, their habits and techniques, so that I can try to apply some aspect of their influential powers to my own toolbox. I have yet to master the revision phase of going through each syllable for meter and flow like Ruta Sepetys does. I mean, she’s not only a genius, but she puts everything into her work.

What are you working on now?
I’m revising the second book in the Cheat Code series and working on a different work as well.
I have a few works in progress, most of them Young Adult (YA).
I’d love to revise my Middle Grade horror series, but haven’t gotten around to it yet.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have my own website www.aftenbrook.com
I like interacting with readers through social media and making posts about my work fun and engaging and not salesperson-y. I’m not a salesperson. I am fun though. 😉
I create quizzes sometimes, which I probably enjoy more than anything.
I have a publicist who is a genius and comes with plans and skills to help me be more effective on how, when, and why I promote. I’ve loved having someone to work with on marketing intentions and follow through.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Be honest with yourself about the areas you’re not strong in, evaluate if there is an avenue available to you to strengthen those areas (possibly attending a writing conference could help with this).
Be honest about your time available, and what you can do with that time. I used to have more time before working full time, My goals were larger. I’ve fit my writing goals to my writing time.
Be honest about your strengths. You have strengths, find them, celebrate them, build them.
Find support for your writing–support at your level. Grow together. Support each other as you advance.
Be gentle with yourself as you travel through the writing world. It’s hard. But the nice thing is that most writers have ‘been there, done that’ and understand the feelings of writer roller coasters.

Honestly, keep learning. Keep finding ways to research your craft.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Trust no advice.

What are you reading now?
Just finished ‘People like us’, which is awesome! I was gifted several YA books, which I’m super excited to dig into. ‘Grit’ and ‘The upside of unrequited’.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Keep writing. Keep learning, Keep improving.
I need to finish revising book 2 for Cheat Code and get that to the publisher then finish revising my other secret project 😀

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Princess Bride–it’s always funny no matter how many times you read it.
You said books not 3 or 4 whole series?… Awww now I can’t include any series because I can’t have one book of seven, of one book of five. *sad face*
Where the Sidewalk Ends (or some other Shel Silverstien book of poems)
Survival guide
One would be a notebook so I could write my own stories

Awesome Author - Rosemary Goodacre

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
So far I’ve had magazine stories published and a novella. I love writing, romances mainly, and have completed a novel set in the Swinging 1960s.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
A Fortnight is not Enough.
I began with the persistent fantasy of enjoying a holiday so much I resolved not to come back! This is what my heroine Imogen does in Provence.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I read very widely, including classics.
Among more recent books I’ve been particularly impressed with The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood and The Timetraveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.

What are you working on now?
I am writing a novel set in World War I.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Be persistent – don’t give up easily.

What are you reading now?
Stalin’s Ghost by Martin Cruz Smith. I don’t read a lot of thrillers but his ones, set in Russia and the former Soviet Union, are fascinating. As usual everyone is trying to kill him, particularly the characters who begin by seeming harmless…

What’s next for you as a writer?
More writing – and I need to build up my social media presence.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
The Story of San Michele by Axel Munthe

Awesome Author - Denver Murphy

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hmmm, what to put down… Well, let’s be honest, does it really matter where I was born, my school, which university I attended (there were three of them if you must know). Telling you my favourite colour or which football team I support would actually give you more insight into what I assume are the two important things here:

1) Why write
2) What I write about.

Starting with the first one: why does anyone do what they do unless it’s the result of choice of compulsion. In my case it was both. I considered it an itch I needed to scratch but then I realised it was much more than that; I had found the one thing that I knew I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I have given up a career I invested the whole of my adult nearly 20 years in but I am supported by a wonderful wife and our young son who are willing to make sacrifices to see if I can turn this dream into a reality.

So what do I write about? At the risk of sounding deliberately vague; anything and everything. That’s when I realised this was more than a hobby. I just love the craft of writing. I wrote a children’s picture book series, a primary school aged story, and a teen novel. It didn’t bother me that I was skipping from genre to genre and between age categories. They were never meant to lead anywhere. That was until I turned my hand to crime. Not literally, but literary (thought I would chuck in a weak joke to combat the seriousness of all this). One of my early blogs talks about this in detail but I found something that I was not only proud of, but wanted to share. It has turned into a series and, although I am likely to remain in the adult sphere in terms of what is published, I won’t be writing crime thrillers exclusively.

I’ve now written 2 British crime thrillers (Gamekeeper Turned Poacher – 07/04/18 and Gamekeeper Turned Poacher: Retribution – 18/05/18). Book 3 of this series is work in progress and will be released at the end of June.
I will also be releasing a light hearted sci-fi novel at the end of July, titled Never mind, Just Rewind. Full details of these can be found on my website, www.denvermurphy.com or Amazon Kindle

Thanks.

P.S. If you’re an agent reading this: you had your chance!

P.P.S. Only kidding, send me your details and we can talk turkey.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Gamekeeper Turned Poacher is the first novel that I have written which is aimed at adults. In all honesty, I was in a bit of a dark place, feeling quite aggrieved by society and the protection that is given to people who can legally fleece you or just treat people like rubbish. I see a bit of me in Brandt and he became a good outlet for my anger! I think people will relate to him. He says things that are close to the bone than many people think (whether that is correct or not….) but would never say out loud. I look forward to the reviews!

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m a big fan of the semi colon if that counts, as well as the Oxford comma.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
What excited me as a reader was the way no one seemed safe in a Stephen King novel. The notion that anyone could be killed off has become popularised by programmes like Game of Thrones. I’m not keen on the typical Hollywood ending, which has influenced my writing.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently putting the finishing touches to the third and final book of my Crime Series. I’m considering a very different project next about someone who finds out they are terminally ill and tried to right the wrongs of his past. I’ve enjoyed writing a series, but think it will also be good to have a standalone book here and now and try out new genres. I just love writing!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
As I’m new to this I’m not sure. At the moment my main method is via social media. Watch this space!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I am a new author having only published my debut novel, but if anything it is to not to give up. Treat writing as any other job. You need to put the hard work in, especially if you are self publishing.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I can’t remember who said it to me but when struggling to start my Masters Dissertation I was told just to write. It didn’t matter if I came to see it as rubbish, the process of getting something down gave me a greater understanding of what was needed to produce decent work.

What are you reading now?
Dan Brown’s Inferno. I read his others years ago and picked this one because I like the pace he has to his stories.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’ll be back to Crime after what I mentioned above as I’ve caught the bug. I think I will have a female lead again but want to start just as she joins CID. I want to create a series where you don’t necessarily have to read them in order but if you do you will see the character’s life and career develop. Similar, I guess, to how Lee Child approaches his Jack Reacher series.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Sir Thomas Mallory’s Le Morte D’Arthur – it’s the original telling of the Arthurian legend as we understand it. The style and language is tough going but it would keep me occupied.
The Bible – I guess if I were to be stranded I would be looking for a bit of divine inspiration
Lord of the Rings – I always found fantasy a bit of a challenge as a reader because my mind wanders if there’s too much description of made up places and races. I tried to read it when I was in my teens but now I’ve seen the films it should be much easier going.
Stephen King’s The Dark Tower Series – a bit of a cheat here because there’s 8 books in total but I get bored easily and, although I’ve read them twice, I think I could manage another go.

Awesome Author - Rick McCormick

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I started writing screenplays fifteen years ago. I have written a total of nine screenplays, some of which have received “Consider” marks from independent movie studio readers.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Fifth Plane. It’s the only novel I’ve written and it’s based on my screenplay of the same name. On 9/11, after the four plane crashed in Pennsylvania, I was waiting for a fifth plane. It never happened, but I found it hard to believe there weren’t other planes involved on that day.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I put any idea that comes to mind into a digital voice recorder and then periodically go through it to see what I can add. It can be a scene, a character, a line, etc. No idea is ever too small.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Lee Child. Lots of screenwriting books by Michael Hauge, Richard Walter, Dara Marks, and Dr. Linda Seger.

What are you working on now?
The television series for The Fifth Plane. My next novel will be The Last Sand Granules, also based on my screenplay.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Amazon, Facebook, Twitter.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write every single day. Write by feeling. If you’re writing a comedy, you should be laughing as you type. If not, don’t expect others to laugh.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write a great script and then get it out to as many people as possible.

What are you reading now?
Writing The TV series by Pamela Douglas.

What’s next for you as a writer?
The Last Sand Granules.
When his dying mother pleads with his to change his ways so they can meet in the afterlife in Heaven, a man in prison for murder struggles with his faith because he believes he is already beyond redemption.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Save The Cat, Inside Story, and Writing Screenplays That Sell.

Awesome Author - Adam Clarke

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have written two books and a third smaller text. The first book was a time-travel novel called ‘Me2’ and the second is ‘The Declaration of the Self: On the Abolition of the State’ which outlines how a different way of governing ourselves is possible without the state. The third text is entitled ‘Fallout: Defending the Free Society of Pimlico’ and is my analysis on how a free (anarchistic) society might defend itself against large-scale threats and even a state.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
‘The Declaration of the Self: On the Abolition of the State’ was inspired by my own personal research into the nature of governance. It is surprising that the authority of the state (i.e. governments) has no consistent basis. There is no moral reason to obey a government and we must therefore look for a different way to govern ourselves.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. I work full-time in a 9-5 job, so I wake at around 5am each morning to get a good two hours in each morning and devote most of my weekends to writing and research.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
The books of Stefan Molyneux have had a huge influence on me. Also Lysander Spooner’s ‘No Treason’ and Murray Rothbard’s ‘Anatomy of the State’.

What are you working on now?
I have just finished a short text ‘Fallout: Defending the Free Society of Pimlico’ which is free when subscribing to my website updates. I am currently researching influential anarchists in popular culture and hope to publish a new book later this year on the subject.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
At present, the most successful is Facebook.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Once you have a good idea or plot (if it’s fiction) and you think it has a good chance of being successful, stick to it through thick and thin. Don’t get discouraged in the drafting stage and set aside at least two hours each day to research or work on your draft. I tend to work better in the morning as this is when I am fresh.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I’m not sure. Love and believe in yourself as there is always something an individual is good at, it just needs a bit of confidence and exploration to find out what that hidden talent is.

What are you reading now?
I’m too busy writing right now.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I plan to write a series of extended essays on different aspects of how a free society might work. It’s very early stages, but I plan to write small books on law, education, money and culture in a free society or perhaps a larger book that comprises a collection of all of these.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Lord of the Rings, Everyday Anarchy, The Silmarillion.

Awesome Author - Jean Davis

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I live in West Michigan with my husband, two kids, two terriers and six chickens. I write speculative fiction, mostly fantasy, sci-fi, and some paranormal. My writing tends to be somewhat dark, though I do through in a lighthearted story once in a while just to keep readers guessing. I write both novels and short stories. Currently I have four novels published and four more waiting to get out into the world, along with

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I have recently re-released my dystopian novel, A Broken Race. It previously published through a small press.

A Broken Race was partially inspired by the son of a friend of ours who is autistic. I wanted to write a book where those with special needs were featured.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I prefer to write in the morning in silence if at all possible. The chickens usually ruin that, but I have ear plugs if they get too rowdy. Candlelight is nice, meaning I prefer the lights off so I’m not distracted by anything else in my office and can focus on the glow of my laptop where the writing is supposed to be happening.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I was highly influenced by Stephen Brust’s Vlad Taltos series. He writes a great snarky character.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on The Narvan, a space opera series. There are currently four books written. The publisher’s edits for the first book are sitting in my inbox.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
If there was any one awesome solution to book promotion, we’d all be using it. That would probably break the internet. Instead, we’re all scrambling about, searching for the magical answer. There are a lot of helpful websites, like this one, and Facebook groups out there. You just need to figure out what works best for you.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Sit down and finish your first draft before you worry about whether it’s awful or not. You can fix that later, but you can’t edit or rewrite words that aren’t on the yet on the page.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
You’ll never publish anything if you don’t finish it first.

What are you reading now?
I’m currently working my way through The Woman In Blue, by Elly Griffiths. After a conversation with my daughter about tense, in which we both agreed we were not fans of the present tense, I thought I’d give it a try. I’m contrary like that. Maybe this book can change my mind.

What’s next for you as a writer?
After I get the space opera series off my to do list, I’m back to waffling between a funny fantasy novel, and a YA fantasy or sci-fi novel. I haven’t been able to pull of YA yet, but I’d like to do that someday. A lot of readers ask for it.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’d have to take George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. He writes great characters. That would keep my busy reading for at least a week or so.

Awesome Author - James Mace

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a life-long historian and the author of twenty-one books, including seven Ancient History best-sellers on Amazon and Amazon U.K., as well as two South African History best-sellers. My first career was spent as a soldier and I wrote the initial draft of my first book, ‘Soldier of Rome: The Legionary’, when I was in Iraq from 2004 to 2005. What started off as a cathartic means of escapism turned into a regular hobby. By 2011 I was able to leave my day job and make a rather comfortable living as an author. While I intend to cover more eras, the two I am currently most passionate about are Ancient Rome and the British Empire.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Lost Souls: The Forgotten Heroes of Eshowe. This is the third book in my series on the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Those familiar with this conflict are mostly drawn to the initial battles at Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift, namely because these were the premises to the popular films ‘Zulu’ (starring Sir Michael Caine in his first major role), and ‘Zulu Dawn’ (starring Peter O’Toole and Burt Lancaster). Few realise that these were just the opening battles, and the war would continue well beyond this. I have therefore taken it upon myself to not only tell the heroic and tragic tales of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift, which are covered in the first two books of my series, but also take readers beyond what they know from the films. There will be two more books in this series, following the war between the Zulu Kingdom and the British Empire to its bitter end.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Aren’t all writing habits unusual? Honestly I’m not sure, as I don’t think there is a standard way for authors to write. I do tend to listen to various forms of music when I write. And because my works are historically based, I prefer to work with either music from that era, or something relevant. While my favourite genre is European / Power Metal, I tend not to listen to that when I write, and I also avoid music with lyrics, as it can be distracting. I’ve been on a bit of an odd kick lately, listening to a lot of Retro 80s Synth, which I find works regardless of what I’m writing at that particular moment. Seriously, I’m able to write about Roman gladiators or British redcoats while listening to the soundtrack from ‘Blade Runner’.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I first read the Robert Graves series, ‘I, Claudius’, when I was twelve, while at the same time watching the series on Masterpiece Theatre. That was what really got me enthralled in Roman History. In fact, the subject of my first book, ‘Soldier of Rome: The Legionary’, was inspired by events from this series, albeit I would not be able to put the proverbial pen-to-paper for another seventeen years. William Altimari and George Shipway were other Roman novelists who I drew inspiration from. As for just great story-telling and world building, I have scarcely found better than Tolkien, albeit George R.R. Martin’s ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ (aka Game of Thrones) comes awfully close. My most recent series on the Anglo-Zulu War was inspired greatly by historian Ian Knight, who’s written over thirty books on the subject. I actually had the privilege of travelling to South Africa with him in 2017, and he even penned the foreword to my first book in that series, ‘Brutal Valour: The Tragedy of Isandlwana’.

What are you working on now?
I just started on Book Four of my Anglo-Zulu War series, titled, ‘Cruelty of Fate: The Battle for Khambula’. It happens simultaneously as the events in the third book, ‘Lost Souls’, but takes place a hundred miles to the north.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
To be honest, despite having spent the last twelve years as a writer, I am still a novice when it comes to promotion and what actually works to bring readers to my books. I hope Awesome Gang will find itself at the top of the list soon!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write for yourself and be true to your art. It doesn’t matter if you never sell more than a few copies or if you become the next J.K. Rowling. Always remember why you write and keep that close to your heart. Your reasons and motivations are not going to be the same as mine, nor should they be. What is right for one author may not be the same for you. Above all else, finish what you start! The worst thing you can do is quit mid-project because you allowed self-doubt to cripple your artistic muse.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I honestly don’t know why I’m drawing a blank here. It’s late and I should probably be in bed (I’m not ‘old’, I just go to bed at a more reasonable hour!). So I will answer this with some of my favourite life quotes that have stuck with me:

“Assume a virtue, if you have it not.” – William Shakespeare

“A villain is a hero of the other side. – George R.R. Martin

“In a free state there should be freedom of speech and thought.” – Emperor Tiberius Caesar

“If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.” – The Dalai Lama

“Next to a battle lost, the saddest thing is a battle won.” – Field Marshal Sir Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington

“If this day should be your last, may you die with honour.” – (I honestly don’t know where I came up with this. I’d like to think it is a ‘James Mace original’, but I highly doubt it is)

What are you reading now?
I sometimes have to force myself to find non-research books so that I can relax with a little ‘pleasure reading’. Most recently, I re-read the complete Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series by Douglas Adams. I also just finished Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, although I confess this was actually because I’ve been cast in a local production of the play (Shakespearean acting is another of my hobbies).

What’s next for you as a writer?
Good question; one which my wife has also asked me. I still have two more books to write in the Anglo-Zulu War series. After that, I’m not sure, but I do have options. I could always return to Rome, as my last Roman work, ‘Die by the Blade’, does leave open the path for a new series. However, I have already written fifteen books set in Ancient Rome, and am feeling a bit of fatigue. I’ve contemplated doing a handful of stand-alone works set during World War One, while at the same time I’ve long wished to write a Medieval series set during the reign of King Edward III.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Lord of the Rings, The Complete Works of Shakespeare, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and of course the entire James Mace collection; because hey, I still get entertained by my own books!

Awesome Author - Alex Bailey

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
True story, I started writing 20 years ago, when I walked into a mystical fog on the National Mall and came out the other side with a complete first novel in tact. I’d never written anything! Never had an idea for a book. Never had an inkling of desire to write. I’d taken the minimum requirements of English in college and dreaded every minute.

So, what’s a person to do with this weird experience? Push it aside. Squelch the compelling feeling to write it down until it boiled over. I finally gave in and bought a ton of books on how to write. Took some courses and off I went. From time to time, I’d again reject the compulsion and walked away. Just for it to follow me. Capture me, swing me around until I cried, “Uncle!” I’ve completely given up and given in. I decided to get serious, take more courses, join a critique group, and finally get to publishing these stories that are now constantly filling my inner ether.

I can’t count how many books I’ve written over the years, I can’t even remember them all. But I have three books in print, one under the pen name, Alex Bailey and two under the pen name, Hoot N. Holler.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Future Memoir of Ann Jones was the debut novel for the pen name, Alex Bailey. I wrote it several years ago and pushed it aside, with a mountain of others. I only recently picked it back up, polished it off, and sent it out into the world. It’s hard to say what inspired it, as ideas swirl in my head constantly. Including. All. Night. Long. Yes, even waking me with their insistence on being heard!

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I wrote my first book, The Peacemaker, never to see the light of day, as it was, after all, my first book completely on the Washington D.C. metro riding to and from work. It took a year and it was back before laptops were a thing, and so it was completely pen/ink in a notebook. I’d rush home and type that day’s creation. There were many days I was stared at and pitied, while tears strolled down my cheeks. I felt like Joan Wilder in “Romancing the Stone” only I was in public!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have read every Cecelia Ahern book she’s written with a touch of magic, as I aspire to be her! My tastes are widely varied and I read everything, except Horror, thanks to Stephen King’s cure of me of ever wanting to read horror again, though I recently read 11/23/63 (again with the magic) and am currently reading many, but two are Tomi Adeyemi’s, “Children of Blood and Bone” and LJ Ryan’s, “The View from our Window.”

What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on several novels, as Alex Bailey, both of which are chick lit with a touch of magic, as that seems to be the category that is most often stabbing my heart to escape. Also, as Hoot N. Holler, I’m working on sequels to both children’s book series that are currently out – Skerry Island: The Prince and the Pirate Book One and Terror in Boring Town: A Sam and Rex Adventure.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ve only just started promoting, so I’m no expert at any superlative when it comes to book promotion.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write! Keep writing! And write some more! And if you attempt to give up and something feels like a physical hand on your back pushing you along, give in and get back to writing!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Read everything you can get your hands on.

What are you reading now?
Tomi Adeyemi’s, “Children of Blood and Bone” and LJ Ryan’s, “The View from our Window.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Working on the marketing end and trying to squeeze in some writing. This marketing stuff is tough. Much more so than writing!

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
“A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens would always always always be my first choice whether desert island, highest mountain, or the rain forest!
The entire Harry Potter series I consider 1 book, so that may be cheating, but I’d try to sneak them in.
Skerry Island: The Prince and the Pirate Book One because there may be some good ideas if I get caught having to survive on that island.

Awesome Author - Thomas J. Torrington

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a former golf instructor turned author from the state of Maine. I’ve self-published one novel, and have written and published several short stories as well.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Evergreen” is a story that I wrote for my two young children.

I asked myself the question, “what would I want them to know if I were no longer here to teach, and to guide them.” It is a difficult question for a father to ask himself, and in many ways one that’s even harder to answer. But it’s something that I kept in the forefront of my mind while writing, and those are the lessons I wrote into this novel.

The result, for me, is a story that is deeply meaningful and emotional. I’ve had readers tell me that it felt like I was speaking to them personally through the story. Others have said they need to purchase it for their own children to read as they grow and mature.

My hope is that “Evergreen” will one day mean a lot to my children – that it is something they will cherish for the rest of their lives as a reminder of their father, and something they will pass on to future generations.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t think so. I’m a stay at home dad, dealing with toddlers, so I try to cram as much writing in as I can during “quiet time” each day. I tend to think out my writing for the day in my head beforehand, since time is limited at the physical keyboard.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love literary fiction in general. I would say I was influenced by John Steinbeck, Hemingway, and Raymond Carver, but my editor says I remind him of John Irving.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on a novel with a female protagonist that is psychologically far darker than “Evergreen.” It deals with the very difficult subject matter of sexual assault and rape, and the effects on the victim as years go by after the incidents, without any graphic or explicit descriptions of the events themselves.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ll just say up front, I’m not very good at marketing. It’s certainly a weakness of mine. I try my best to be active on social media, but I’ve found doing some advertising on Amazon works best for me.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t be afraid to fail. Embrace the failures, because that’s how you’ll get better. That, and tell stories every chance you get, be them written, or spoken. In the end, we are story tellers.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I ever got was to write for one or two specific people – tell the story to them. It’s impossible to please everyone, and someone out there is going to dislike your book. “A book for everyone, is a book for no one.”

What are you reading now?
I’m currently in the middle of The Count of Monte Cristo.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Beyond my current WIP, I have several other ideas lined up for future works. I’m going to continue to churn out books as long as people continue to read and enjoy them.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Wow, I’d have to take those books that no matter how many times I read them I discover something new. So…
The Bible
Lord of the Rings
Watership Down

Awesome Author - Morgan Smith

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m an archaeologist who specialized in textiles and domestic life of the late Iron Age and Early Medieval period in northern Europe. I’m also a lifelong reader of fantasy and science fiction. This is my third novel in a fantasy series called the Averraine Cycle.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Shades of Winter was inspired by my fascination with the Viking Age, and my research into how the people of that time viewed themselves and others. But it’s also based around themes of loyalty and betrayal.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Well, sort of. I write lying in bed. This started in grad school, when the rooms I lived in were so tiny that there simply was no other place to work. Now I’m so used to it that I can’t see any other way to do it.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Oddly enough, Jane Austen. She was a master at fiction structure. But then, I also fell in love with Terry Pratchett, and Elizabeth Moon, and Barbara Hambly, and Lois McMaster Bujold, so I think those authors, too, have sent me in particular directions in my writing.

What are you working on now?
I’m writing a romance-fantasy . It’s still in the world of Averraine, but in a different country and centuries later. It’s kind of a mash-up of Jane Austen and fantasy, where manners meets magic and makes mayhem.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I try to connect with readers on social media – not sell, sell, sell, but with my comments on a variety of things. I post a lot of cartoons and memes (mostly things that make me laugh) and when I see something that moves me, I respond. I’ve made some great friends that way, and if, at some point, they get curious about the novels, that’s just icing on the cake.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read. Read a lot. Read things outside your comfort zone.

And live a little. Take a risk or two. You can’t bring anything emotional or wise to a story if you play it safe in real life.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Go big or go home.

What are you reading now?
The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen. It’s really good.

What’s next for you as a writer?
More Averraine Cycle stuff is in the works These books are stand-alones, but they all eventually tie in together.

After that, I think I’d like to try doing some “urban fantasy” stuff. Just for the change in pace.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Gosh, that’s a hard one. Probably LoTR, a complete Shakespeare, and Pride and Prejudice…and maybe something by Neil Gaiman, because he’s just awesome.

Awesome Author - Jason Blair

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Jason W. Blair is primarily a suspense/thriller novelist. He lives in the rural town of Bellefonte, Pennsylvania with his wife, Judith, and his daughter, Samantha. He recently released his fifth book, “The Legend of All Things Unwanted”. However, unlike his previous works, his latest book is categorized as a Juvenile Adventure/Fantasy novel.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Mr. Blair’s latest novel, which debuted on March 25, 2018, is a Juvenile Adventure/Fantasy novel entitled, “The Legend of All Things Unwanted”. It is a story of a nine-year-old boy named Max McKee who loses a precious gift from his visiting Uncle Patrick and awakens an ancient Irish legend. Fearing the worst, Max flees from the schoolyard and into the forest, where he stumbles into a mysterious black-shrouded man who leads young Max on a marvelous journey through an unknown world (The Place of All Things Unwanted) full of dragons, faeries, witches, wizardry, elves, gnomes, and a brave breed of fuzzy, horned, ankle biting creatures called Morlaes. On his quest for the missing gift, Max learns much about courage, bravery, honor, and friendship. This book is inspired by everyone who has ever lost something and wondered where on Earth (or perhaps beyond) has it gone?

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not necessarily. I did when I first began novel writing a few years back. The most important element of writing, I believe, is coffee. You can never have too much, but a lack of it produces empty pages.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Looking back on the writing of this latest novel, I feel that many authors and countless books have contributed to the creation of this extraordinary tale. Of them, I believe that “The Chronicles of Narnia” by C.S. Lewis, “The Fairy Rebel” by Lynn Reid Banks, and the motion picture “The Labyrinth” featuring the late, great David Bowie had the most impact on how the story turned out.

What are you working on now?
I currently have several projects before me that I’m attempting to decide upon. The first is an anthology of suspenseful tales entitled, “Shadows of Route 22”, the second is the conclusion of the Desperate Shadows Trilogy: “Patriots of the Revolution”, and the third is a thriller novel entitled, “Writer’s Block”.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
First and foremost is, of course, Awesomegang.com! Apart from that, I tend to promote on major social media platforms above all. Some others include fellow bloggers, TheAuthorShow.com, press releases, and Appearances on video sharing websites (ie. Youtube).

Do you have any advice for new authors?
The two most important things to remember in starting a career in writing is:
1) You must learn to endure rejection. It will come to you in many forms, but it will come, nevertheless.
2) Overnight success will never happen. In fact, it takes years to build your platform, your brand of writing. However, if you wake up thinking of writing, and you go about your day thinking of writing, and you fall asleep thinking of writing, then you are truly destined for it. You see, each of us who are called do not choose to be writers; but rather, the gift of writing chooses us. And it is with that gift that we can bring smiles to the faces of readers worldwide.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“You try. You fail. You try. You fail. But the only true failure is when you stop trying.”
— Madame Leota, “The Haunted Mansion” (2003)

What are you reading now?
I am currently reading Michael Crichton’s best-selling novel, “Next”.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I have several writing projects lined up; it’s just a matter of which one to choose. Additionally, I am working on a PC adventure game, and either a Pod-Play (modern radio show) series or an animated web series. I haven’t committed to either yet.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, Michael Crichton’s “Timeline”, and Charles Dickens’s “David Copperfield”.

Awesome Author - Wendy Gamble

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I grew up in a world full of science and science fiction. From an early age, spinning tales came naturally. My kindergarten teacher reported, “Wendy has a good vocabulary. This, coupled with a vivid imagination makes her quite a story teller.”
My writing brings together years of science studies, work in heath care, and training and assistant teaching as a black belt in karate. I had articles on art and science fiction published in print and on-line magazine magazines, but my passion is fiction.
The first novel I drafted was in the Star Trek universe. It was a great learning experience, then I moved on to complete a long fantasy novel, which I plan to polish and publish in the future.
I look forward to throwing myself into MedSci Missions 2 and sneaking in time for my other loves: painting, gardening, creative cooking, yoga, photography, karate, kicking back to good movies and shows, and, of course, my family.
I live in New Brunswick, Canada, where I volunteer at school to help increase literacy and encourage thinking, am a member of the local book club, and run a writing group.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The first book I’ve published is called “Earth and Beyond: MedSci Missions 1. I was happily working on a bio-tech spy thriller when I got caught up in the “Save Enterprise” wave. That led me to suggest a space fiction scenario on a forum at Scifi Studios, which evolved into group brainstorming on a universe for MedSci Missions (previously “Medlab,” then “MedSci.”).
People seemed to expect me to write the story for a show I wanted to watch, so I did. I’m thankful for the encouragement and support, and for meeting a great illustrator/author István Szabó, Ifj, my main tech author/consultant BJ Hansen and many others listed on my Acknowledgements page. Development of the project continued at Syzygy Studios and an amazing amount of ideas and material were created. After some hard decisions and some emptied pockets, it was decided it was best to leave it in my hands to transform into novels made vivid by the richly developed setting, characters, and stories.
I set about the task with new enthusiasm, but there was an overwhelming amount of material to sort and edit. Along with the novel, I compiled a thirteen-thousand-word Glossary of Terms, a Ship Guide, and a Medical Compendium. The glossary will be made available for free on the MedSci Missions website (under construction), and the guides will be published in the future when they can be properly illustrated and laid out.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I find I write best when it’s dark outside, partly because it’s easier to see the computer screen, but also, the garden can’t call me outside (though I have gardened with a flashlight). Also, the dead of night is when it’s easiest to slip into another world and stay there. I know no one will come to the door or phone or ask for dinner…so I often write late into the night, or all night.
I also reach around my cat awkwardly to type sometimes because I don’t want to move her.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Star Trek was a huge influence, but there are many others. Dr. Robin Cook’s medical thrillers hit just the right note with me, and were the major influence on the direction of my space adventures. I have really enjoyed Ian Fleming’s and Robert Ludlum’s spy novels as well, and elements of spy thriller are working into MedSci Missions.

What are you working on now?
I have ideas and notes for the second novel in the planned MedSci Missions series. Fiction writing is on a brief pause, however, as I work on promotion.
The second novel will be fun because the ship is already launched and out in space, the characters are introduced. The glossary is written and available for me to refer to, which I have to because of the amount of material in it. Now the main aliens the crew and specialists will deal with can be introduced and delved into as the plot threads from the first novel continue.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
That remains to be seen.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Not yet. In a few years I can write an essay for you.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Everything in moderation, including moderation.
Specific to writing: Write what you’re passionate about.

What are you reading now?
Robin Cook’s Charlatans, Graphic Design School, Best Karate Volume 6, Yona of the Dawn Vol. 6 on the encouragement of my daughter, but I am enjoying it.

What’s next for you as a writer?
The next novel in the MedSci Mission series, learning to put technical guides together, editing my fantasy novel. Blogging as necessary for promotion or for a topic I feel strongly about. With the kids gone to university this is my time!

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Field Guide to Edible Plants, How to Build Emergency Shelters, Harry Potter 5 to let me relax with pure fun, my latest novel for inspiration.

Awesome Author - Bree Moore

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve been writing fantasy since the fourth grade. I live in Ogden, have an amazing husband and four little kids. I write fantasy novels between doling out cheerios and folding laundry.

“Woven” is my first published novel, but the sequel “Bound” is coming out soon, along with several anthology contributions.

In real-life, I work as a birth doula and midwife’s assistant, attending women in pregnancy and labor, which is huge inspiration for my writing.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Woven” was inspired by a poem titled “The Lady of Shallot” by Tennyson and Arthurian Legend (Camelot, knights of the round table, etc.), and by a song sung by Loreena Mckennit (The Lady of Shallot).

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. I listen to new age, enya- like music when I write, though, and usually have chocolate. Sometimes a baby in my lap. 😉

What authors, or books have influenced you?
SO MANY. Harry Potter was huge for me, Mists of Avalon, Brandon Sanderson, to name a few.

What are you working on now?
“Bound” is the sequel to “Woven”, based on the story of Tristan and Isolde (another Camelot legend). A time travel anthology, a moon-phase anthology, a Peter Pan sequel, and a trilogy!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I prefer in-person book signings, but when I’m not there I’m on Facebook, mainly. And email. People still read email, so it’s a good place to be.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
You have time. Relax a bit, and make that book REALLY good before submitting or self publishing. Hire a professional editor for sure. But first, WRITE THE BOOK!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The next book is your best marketing investment.

What are you reading now?
“Bride of the Sea” by Emma Hamm- fantastic dark fantasy!

What’s next for you as a writer?
Lots more books!

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Book of Mormon, “Lirael” by Garth Nix… can I bring my kindle? Lol. Those two, mainly. Maybe a single volume edition of all seven chronicles of Narnia, or just book 2 (The Lion the witch and the wardrobe) if that’s not allowed, lol.

Awesome Author - M.J. Moore

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Feralis is my first and only book so far, unless you count product manuals!

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
For as long as I can remember, I have loved anything that had wizards, magic, or anything supernatural in the story. Just the idea that a good book can take you out of this world and drop you somewhere exciting has always fascinated me. My book, Feralis, is my attempt to give back to a literary world that has fueled my imagination for over 30 years.

One day, almost a decade ago, I decided that I had to know if I could write half as well as I could read. And in just a few weeks, I had the first draft of what is now an actual novel. Of course those first few weeks were followed by too many edits, a terrible attempt to change the tense of the book, and a 6-8 year period of refusing to edit the story one more time. But here we are!

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to quickly write the first draft, and then take almost a decade to move forward with the process!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Jim Butcher was the one that first inspired me to write something. His ability to build a world and characters that weave and wander through decades of writing is nothing short of amazing! But there are so many other great writers that I’ve followed: Richard Kadrey, Neil Gaimen, Pierce Brown…there are too many great authors. I could spend a week here!

What are you working on now?
I’m just enjoying the publishing process and interested to see how people react to my book. If I get enough interested people, I’ll start writing the second installment here soon.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Well, I’m very new to the process, but so far awesomegang.com as been amazing 🙂

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t let the fear of rejection stop you from always moving forward. Nothing great has ever been accomplished without first taking a risk.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If you’re going to do something, put everything you have into the attempt.

What are you reading now?
This week? I’m finishing the Stormlight trilogy and just diving into Altered Carbon (because the show was sooooo good).

What’s next for you as a writer?
Starting the second installment of The Fall of Marshall Grey

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
First, I would glue a bunch of books together to make it count as one book, but if I had to choose:
Red Rising
Anything by Jim Butcher
Neverwhere
Robinson Crusoe (because he made being stranded on an island look easy)

Awesome Author - André Van Wyck

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Stumbling Stoned is my second book and my first foray into urban fantasy. At first I was just messing around with writing in the first person (which I’d never done before) and being a little irreverent because my previous book, A Clatter of Chains, was so wholesomely epic. But once I’d created the main character, the Patchwork Prince, he would not let me rest until he’d dragged me to the end of the story. And I can feel him looking in my direction again already.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Patchwork Prince began as a mental exercise: how would you, as a mental patient, convince your psychiatrist that your delusion was really real? And how could you, the mental patient, be certain it was? The story thereafter owes a lot of its quest-methodology and quirkiness to old-style anime series (like Inuyasha) and dated computer games (like Leisure Suit Larry and Monkey Island). The main character is questing for bits of himself and his past, to try and piece them together (or patch himself up). Success might lead to startling revelations…

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’d give my left arm to have unusual writing habits. They could probably double the output volume of my usual writing habits. Although it would then be twice as hard to type…

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I cut my teeth on David Eddings and Robert Jordan. Later I added Steven Erikson, J.V. Jones, Brandon Sanderson and Will Wight. They (and many others) have all contributed in their way. Although I freely admit to reading Stephenie Meyer and Patricia Briggs as well.

What are you working on now?
The second installment of The Waking Worlds’ series, A Fray of Furies, is foremost on my word processor. At least two friends have threatened me with a seance if I don’t finish the series before I die (and I take those threats very seriously).

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
At this stage, promoting my book is a dream, not a reality. But views-wise, I would have to say Twitter is working hardest for me. But please do check out my author site at www.andrevanwyck.com.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
There will be times when you feel like a failure. Like you are wasting your life and like you would do more good shoveling (or being) compost. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and keep writing. Everything else is just a popularity contest.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“If you don’t see the book you want on the shelf, write it.” ~ Beverly Cleary

What are you reading now?
The Traveler’s Gate Trilogy by Will Wight.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Be discovered, get famous, sell a gazillion copies … sit back down in my little one bedroom with no view and write the next one.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Night Watch by Terry Pratchett; Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson; Night Broken by Patricia Briggs

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
When I was twelve, I wrote an autobiography for a sixth grade English assignment. In the last chapter, I wrote that I wanted to be an author. When I turned fifty, my dreams came true! And I haven’t stopped writing since. I have self-published six books. Organize The Nancy Way, Secrets Can Be Deadly, 3-Year Journal, Shadow 365, Hidden in Shadow Pines, and Black Roses for Cassidy

I also blog at NancyRoeAuthor.com. You’ll find articles on organizing tips, recipes, craft ideas, computer tips, grammar tips, and unusual holidays. Even my dog, Shadow, writes an article—there has to be humor, and he’s a funny guy!

I’m a Midwest farm girl at heart and currently live in Tennessee with my husband and four-legged child.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Black Roses for Cassidy. I love writing mystery novels. My characters speak to me. (Usually when I go to bed. I have to keep paper and pen on my nightstand.)

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I use a 4×6 index card for each character where I note their birthday, habits, likes, dislikes, etc. I also scour magazines or the internet for pictures of what I think the characters look like and print the pictures and glue them to the index card.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I loved reading Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys growing up.

What are you working on now?
My seventh book and fourth mystery. It will take place in Galena, Illinois and involves a baker who finds a dead body in his apartment, which leads him on a scavenger hunt.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Besides this website? Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Find a critique partner or group. Having input from others is invaluable.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Never give up!

Awesome Author - Christopher McGarry

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have lived most of my life in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Growing up, I always read books and wrote stories. After high school, I studied journalism at Holland College. For over a decade, I worked as a journalist, freelance writer and for a one-year term editor of a national magazine, Canadian Firearms Journal. When not writing, I enjoy swimming, working out at the gym, target shooting and hiking. To date, I have written 10 novels. My first was titled Unforeseen Fury. That was followed by the crime thriller Summer of Fear. Within a month, I will be releasing the fifth entry of the North American Empire series. The books in the series are When the Guns Were Turned On Us, Dead of Winter, Uncertain Allies and the Gathering Storm. Stay tuned for The Final Conflict.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is called Black Mass. In the story, a seasoned Chicago homicide detective named Danny Doyle is tasked with protecting a stunning fashion photographer from a murderous Satanic cult. Stories of cult killings in the news as well as the movies Cobra, The Eyes of Laura Marrs, Someone to Watch Over me and The Bodyguard inspired me to write Black Mass.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No, I wouldn’t say that I have unusual writing habits. I like to do my writing in the morning and focus on the business aspect of my work in the afternoon.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
The most inspirational authors in my life are Stephen Hunter, James Patterson and James Wesley Rawles.

What are you working on now?
At present, I’m working on a crime thriller yet to be named.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
There is no one ‘best’ method. I like to make use of free promotion sites. I have other 1400 members of my mailing list as well as over 3,000 followers on Facebook and Twitter. Amazon ads are fine, but can be expensive.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Be persistent. As the old AC/DC songs says ‘It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock ‘n’ roll.’ You have to play the long game. It takes a while to build up a following. Never give up.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Work hard and build a following. Be social and promote your work when you can.

What are you reading now?
‘Shotgun Alley’ by Andrew Klaven.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Continuing to write novels and improve my craft.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?

Awesome Author - Diane Martin

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am an author, publisher, and playwright. I’ve published 10 novels. I was born in Chicago, Illinois and currently live in the Chicago-land area. I earned my Master of Arts and Bachelor of Arts degree from Chicago State University. I am the producer, playwright, and director of the stage-play, entitled, “Somebody Else’s Baby.” I am, also, a philanthropist who works closely with my husband to help others through our non-profit (501c3) organization called, Srewolf & Nitram H.E.A.R.T.S Foundation.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest novel is entitled, “Daddy.” I wrote this book because I feel like, although, we see men in more of a leadership capacity in this country, when it comes to the family, they must take the backseat to the needs of their family – often getting lost in the family dynamic. Women, for the most part, raise the children, run the households, while men are pushed into the background. This is not true for every household, but it is true for many…this book gives them a voice.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes, when I’m writing I eat some of the worst foods. I look for things that are convenient which means that they are never healthy. My go-to is chips and cookies.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
My biggest influence was neither a book or an author. The person who influenced me to write was my eight grade English teacher. She had such a unique way of bringing stories to life.

What are you working on now?
Currently, I’m not working on anything.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Email marketing has worked best for me.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Yes, my advice is keep writing.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice…never give up.

What are you reading now?
Nothing…

What’s next for you as a writer?
I try not to think that far in advance. I let things happen when they’re supposed to happen and not a minute sooner.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
My book, entitled, “Peaches” (It’s a good book), “Native Son” by Richard Wright, and “The Evidence of Things Not Seen” by James Baldwin.

Awesome Author - S. Scott

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a stay at home mom that has been devouring romance novels for years. After going through several books a week, I decided to start writing some of my own ideas in 2014. I only got the courage to share them this year. My first book, Of Two Hearts, is available on Amazon now. My next project is coming out in May and I am so excited to share it with everyone!

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Of Two Hearts is the name of my debut novel. The book’s title was inspired by a song called, Man of Two Minds by The Trews. The song talks about a love triangle where the man is torn because he is genuinely in love with two people. Of Two Hearts is also a love triangle and I kept finding myself thinking of the song’s lyrics while writing.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I usually only get to write in the evenings once the baby is in bed. I like to sit on the couch, in front of the fireplace, with a cup of coffee or tea and just zone out. That and running are the two greatest things I do for myself in terms of self care.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
The list is huge! If I think way back to 2014 when I started writing, it was in the middle of the Fifty Shades frenzy.
I had watched an interview with E.L.
James where she talked about just being a normal woman with a normal life, who wrote on her blackberry! That’s when I realized anyone can do this, you simply need to put the words on paper and put it out there.

What are you working on now?
My next book, Burn, comes out May 2018. It’s a contemporary romance with a bit more of a suspenseful twist.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Awesomegang is wonderful of course. I also use Instagram often (@s.scott.author) and Goodreads is always a favourite.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write, write, write. If you can follow through and complete your story, the hardest part is done and the rest will fall into place.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Be yourself. Not everyone will like your work. If you stay true to what you like to write and like to read, you’ll find others who like it too.

What are you reading now?
I’m rereading the Something in the Way series by Jessica Hawkins. It hurt my heart in the best way the first time I read it.

What’s next for you as a writer?
My next project, Burn, comes out in May. After that, First Glance, will be releasing in the fall. If you get a chance to read Of Two Hearts and meet the character, Tillie, then you’ll want to check that one out. It will follow her unconventional path to happily ever after.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
A bullet journal
Anything by Hailey Faiman
Fifty Shades
Marx Girl by T.L. Swan

Awesome Author - J. E. Bright

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
After many years as a children’s book editor at such publishing houses as HarperCollins, Scholastic, and Simon & Schuster, I became a full-time freelance writer. Now I’ve had more than 115 books published for boys and girls, specializing in adventure stories and books for reluctant readers.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My most recent book is called Bernie’s Bad Jokes. It was inspired by a beloved cat — Bernie, of course, the same one who stars in the photos in the joke book — who died suddenly before he was 5 years old. Bernie was a strange, awkward, and hilarious cat, which is why I’m honoring him with terrible but funny jokes. It’s the first children’s book I’ve self-published.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Sometimes if I drink too much Diet Coke while writing, I’ll stand up on my swiveling desk chair to type more intensely.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
The whole journey was first influenced by L. Frank Baum and the Oz books.

What are you working on now?
A long, middle-grade novel that I’ve been putting together for more than 7 years now.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Pinterest seems to get the most traction, but my own website helps, too. I just have to make it more mobile friendly!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Really, I think this is the only advice: keep writing. The only way out is through.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Do not compare yourself to anyone else. You’re on your own journey with its own challenges and timeline.

What are you reading now?
I just finished When You Reach Me, by Rebecca Stead. I’m not usually a fan of time travel stories, but that was lovely.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Finishing the big novel that I’ve been carrying around for years, and then . . . scripts for an animated TV show.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Gone with the Wind
A big book of modern short stories, like a Norton.
A Wrinkle in Time

Awesome Author - Rebecca Main

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi there! I’m currently traveling the world with my husband. Our most recent adventures have taken us to Central America, where we have fallen in love with Gautemala—and most especially—Antigua. I’ve written three books so far, with another dozen or so plaguing my mind.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Wardens of Starlight. The third book of my series (A Soulmark Series) I was terribly excited to write it because I knew I would be expanding the universe to a new legion of supernaturals. Buffy the Vampire Slayer may or may not have helped inspire the badass herione—Calliope—who is a warrior herself.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I typically don’t read what I write… as in, my gaze is usually averted from my screen when I get on a writing streak! For whatever reason, I find myself pulled into the thousand-yard stare—lost to my own imagination as I write out the scenes of my book while they happen before my eyes.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Marrisa Meyer, Anne Rice, Erin Morgenstern, and Stephen King have all been large influencers in my writing. They effortlessly draw me into the stories they weave, and I strive to do that in my own writing as well.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on the fourth book in my book series (A Soulmark Series)—Mr. Vrana. It’s been the most challenging book I’ve written to date. I’m diving away from the safety of the Adolphus Pack I’ve written and into the dark, seductive world of vampires!

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ve found good success with Bookbub, FreeBooksy, and Bargain Booksy.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write on! Even when the words aren’t right—push through and write on. Just make it to the next scene and you’ll surely find yourself breathing easier, as well as writing easier.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
There’s no such thing as writer’s block. It’s true.

What are you reading now?
Scarlet (The Lunar Chronicles Book 2) by Marissa Meyer.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Discovering new lore from the countries my husband and I will visit.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Night Circus, The Book Thief, Treasure Island, and Boat Building for Beginners (and Beyond).
